VACCINE NARRATIVE
OPSDEP BRIEFING, 15 FEB 91
Ted, please change slide 3 (ANTHRAX VACCINE PRODUCTION). Change
under Michigan EMembers" to Merabers".
Reason is that the FDA has not approved the two fermentors. Also,
one of the new fermentor malfunctioned and is being repaired.
Will provide update as soon as get good idea of status.
So slide is as follows:
ANTHRAX VACCINE PRODUCTION
MICHIGAN
28 FEB 91
MAR 91
rest of slide
SLIDE 1. VACCINE SHIPPED. To date there have been three
shipments of vaccines and botulinum antitoxin shipped to the AOR.
Enough vaccines have been delivered to vaccinate the number of
service members listed on the slide. The latest information
indicates that CENTCOM is progressing well with the vaccination
program.
SLIDE 2. CENTCOM CONTINGENCY STOCKS (AFTER EXPOSURE) One of the
major points of the Medical Biological Warfare Action Plan is to
provide for the treatment of service members after an exposure to
anthrax or botulinum toxin. As a result, a CENTCOM Contingency
stock of anthrax vaccine and botulinum antitoxin was established
for post-exposure treatment as listed on the slide. If service
members (SM) are exposed to anthrax, they would be immediately
directed by their commander to begin taking the Cipro antibiotic.
Then as the situation permits, the SM would complete the three
dose anthrax treatment vaccination series. Because of the small
quantities of the botulinum antitoxin, it will have to be used
prudently for SM's exposed to the botulinum toxin. Currently
there is enough Cipro in the AOR to treat @seritice members for
Odaya.
SLIDE 3. ANTHRAX VACCINE PRODUCTION The projected anthrax
vaccine production for the three manufacturers is listed on the
slide.
