5. @ Availability of Vaccine in CONUS.
a. LTC McKee reported that USAMRIID was holding
of both anthrax and botulinum vaccine
reserve. This stockpile represented the only reserve in tl
country and limited quantities of vaccine were needed for
health use (e.g., workers occupationally at risk).
b. COL Erdtmann raised the issue of a strategic resern
these vaccines in the event of a terrorist attack (e.g., at
White House or the Pentagon) or for some other unforeseen
requirement. In the absence of any additional information,
committee felt that was a sufficient aT
to hold in reserve and priority should be placed on the sh:
of vaccine to theater. The committee did recommend that aE
additional vaccine lots are manufactured and shipped to thE
a portion of each lot could be added to the quantity held
reserve.
6. (U) Supply of Antibiotics for Chemoprophylaxis.
a. It was reported that 15 million tablets of
ciprofloxacin (bulk) had already arrived in theater and th(
first shipment of 5 million tablets, strip packs, would ari
there with in the next day or so. Following the meeting,
several members of the committee met and a decision was ma(
send an additional 1 million tablets, strip packs, to the
theater and the remaining 9 million tablets, strip packs,
be sent to Europe and held specifically for medical defens(
against anthrax. Thirty million tablets of doxycycline ha(
been ordered and Army logistics would be receiving it in
increments (the entire buy would be received by 22 Jan 91)
shipping it to theater.
b. The committee felt at the present time the options
buy an additional 30 million tablets of either ciprofloxac
hould not be exercised. The committee was
interested in how long it would take the companies to gear
production, if additional quantities of either item were n(
and the Pharmacy Consultant was to be asked to get that
information.
7. @ Laboratory Update.
a. COL Pick reported that a contract had been signed

capabilities of the loth Medical Laboratory were being
reactivated (established during an earlier phase of Operat.
