        (Immunology) will be in theater and setup by 12 Jan 91. cc
        Pick reported that the 996th will have the capability to dc
        organism isolation and antibiotic sensitivity testing, incl
        anthrax.

           d. The Navy Forward Laboratory has Polymerase Chain Ree
        (PCR) capability. No decision has yet been reached on whet
        PCR will be placed in the Army Forward Laboratory.

           e. On 3 Jan 91 a committee chaired by MAJ Eng met to di
        the issue of laboratory capabilities in theater. This comn
        recommended against placing animal colonies in theater for
        identification of botulinum toxin. In addition, the commit
        felt that any positive laboratory results obtained in theat
        should only be considered supportive of a diagnosis and not
        irrefutable evidence that a biologic agent had been used.

        8. Recommendations.

            a. No additional ciprofloxacin or doxycycline be purchz
        at the present time.

            b. Only a CONUS based laboratory determination be the
