Inhalation anthrax is an @est uniformly fatal disease.
*arianea with this syndrome in humans in limited; what

information is available indicates that once clearout symptoms

and si@ emerge, even 'Massive dome* of antibiotics are futile.

There is no question that the beat approach to the threat of

inhalation azthrax is active immunization prior to exposure,

possibly coupled with use of antibiotics after exposure. In the

abmance of widely available vaccine, however, administration of

appropiats antibiotics prior to exposure, or in the immediate

post-exposure period, offers a secondary option which could
improve survival, particularly if antibiotic use is combined with
immunization in the post-exposure period. Rationale for this
position is based on the following facts: a) the J4 vitro
sensitivity of Bacillus anthracis to c @ ain antibiotics b) the

demonstrated utility of antibiotics in treatment of

anthrax; and (probably moat importantly) c) results of
experiments in non-h=an primates which indicate clearly that

antibiotics administered after wtosura to lethal challangq with
anthrax spares will prevent disease while they are being given
(and may reduce mortality it continued for a sufficient period of

          time), DECLASSIFIED
