AFTER ACTION REPORT: MEETING OF
THE AD HOC WORKING GROUP FOR THE MEDICAL
DEFENSE AGAINST BIOLOGICAL WARFARE
2 November 1990
1. (U) AGENDA (Enel 1).
2. (U) SIGN-IN-ROSTER (Encl 2).
3. (U) PURPOSE: To assess the biological warfare (BW) t
against U.S. Forces in support of Operation Desert shielo
to evaluate the AMEDDs ability to respond with emphasis i
Detection and Surveillance, Diagnosis, Therapy, and Previ
including Personal Protective Measures, Chemoprophylaxis
vaccination.
4. SUMMARY OF MEETING:
a. (u) The After Action Report from the Ad Hoc Wor:
Group's meeting of 19 October 1990 was reviewed and stoo@
written.
b. Intelligence Update. AFMIC was not repress: Lt
the meeting; however, a representative from Preventive M. Le
updated the committee on current intelligence information
supplied from AFMIC the previous day. Since the meeting
October 1990, the threat level and suspected BW agents h,
changed. The blood samples from the Iraq defectors have
been obtained and therefore, there is still no data on t
presence of BW specific antibodies in these individuals.
C. (u) Laboratory Update. The Navy representative
reported they are continuing to work on the request for
personnel from the other services to augment the Navy Po
Laboratory (NFL). The Canadians have expressed some int
in placing personnel at the NFL. There was a limited
discussion of a R&D cooperative agreement between Austra
nada, Britain and the United States and the possible
implications of placing personnel from other nations at
NFL.
d. Update on BW Working Group. USAMRDC report it
the Tri-service DOD task force continues to meet. The t
force has identified and contacted 15 companies with the
potential of producing anthrax and/or botulinum vaccines
several companies have expressed interest (more with reg
anthrax than botulinum) in supporting this effort.
Noncommercial sites are being surveyed to determine if t
have the capability to manufacture botulinum vaccine. T
