a. BW Challenge Studies. USAMRIID reported on the
continuing BW research efforts. Out of 10 primates who were
exposed to aerosolized anthrax and not treated, 9 died Within 7
to 8 days. Three other groups of primates who were treated
with either ciprofloxacin, tetracycline, or penicillin shortly
following anthrax exposure were all alive after 30 days. In
addition, other primates received vaccine along with the
antibiotics. These primates were recently taken off
antibiotics and are being closely monitored. Other BW
protocols being developed include the human pentavalent and the
equine heptavalent (videspeciatedif) antitoxins.
f. (U) Ribavirin a Contoxin. Use of ribavirin and
contoxin in-theater during operation Desert shield was approved
by the Human Subjects Research Review Board on 17 October
1990. USAKRDC reported both items have been delivered and will
be ready for shipment shortly. This committee recommended that
a final decision with regard to the propositioning of ribavirin
and contoxin be made by the Desert Shield Medical Issues Review
and Ad Hoc Working Group.
g. (U) Educational Training Package. The educational
training package has been printed (1000 copies). Copies were
shipped to the ARCENT and NAVCZNT Surgeons' office in-theater
and others were provided to the USAF (Bolling APB).
h. Laboratory Update. The Navy reported their
laboratory personnel are in place at the Cairo facility and the
Navy Forward Laboratory (NFL). The Navy is considering making
a request to the other services for personnel to augment the
NFL facility. Additional staff may be necessary at the NFL due
to the possible rotation of personnel every 6-12 months or if
it is determined that research protocols should be fielded at
this facility. The Army and Air Force stated that if the Navy
requires personnel to augment the NFL, a request specifying
number and qualifications of personnel desired should be
provided to the respective service.
S. The next meeting of the Ad Hoc Working Group is scheduled
for 2 November 1990.
