        SUBJECT: Anthrax Inoculation Message from USCINCCENT (06140OZ
        Dec 90) (U)


        1. (U) Purpose. To provide comments on the effectiveness of
        antibiotic treatment of service members (SM) exposed to anthrax.

        2. (U) Facts.

            a. (U) Recent studies have shown that Ciprofloxacin is an
        effective treatment against anthrax provided that it is taken
        immediately after exposure and the SM also completes the anthrax
        vaccination series as soon as possible. It is not recommended as a
        theater wide prophylactic measure; however, it should be taken when
        exposure is presumed.

            b. @ OTSG is recommending that a five day supply of
        Ciprofloxacin (10 tablets, one every 12 hrs) be issued to all SM in
        the AOR by 15 Jan 91.
