RMKS/1. A theater-wide botulinum toxoid vaccination program
is to be initiated within the following guidelines.
2. Personnel to be vaccinated
A. Only personnel prioritized by CENTCOM are to be
vaccinated at the present time.
B. Limited additional quantities of botulinum toxoid
vaccine will be available in February & March 1991 to vaccinate
additional designated personnel in the AOR.
3. (U) Botulinum toxoid vaccine information
A. The botulinum toxoid vaccine is administered as a
0.5cc subcutaneous injection as outlined in the package insert
and the educational materials provided with each vaccine
shipment. Two doses are to be given approximately 14 days apart
followed by a third dose approximately 10 weeks after the second
dose.
B. Personnel can expect some burning at the injection
site for up to two minutes after injection.
C. Side effects occur in four to eight percent of
people. Less than six percent of personnel will experience mild
local discomfort at the injection site lasting two to three days.
Systemic reactions consisting of fever, malaise, headache, and
myalgia may occur in up to one percent. Rarely (less than one in
one thousand injections) an individual may be unable to perform
duties for a day or two.
4. Botulinum toxoid vaccination administrative requirements
A. (@ The vaccine is to be administered in an enclosed
area. No media is to be present. No photographs are permitted.
The concept is to keep this program as low key as possible.

INFORMATION ABOUT BOTULINUM VACCINE
You are being given a vaccine called botulinum toxoid
because you are considered at risk of exposure to botulism.
Botulism can cause serious paralysis or death. It is caused by
toxins that interfere with the normal transmission of nerve
signals. Botulism can arise from: (a) contaminated food and
water, (b) Contaminated wounds, (c) A biological warfare attack.
Symptoms of botulism can begin as early as three hours or as late
as several days after exposure to the toxin. Symptoms include
blurred vision, generalized weakness, difficulty in swallowing
and talking. Treatment after exposure is primarily supportive
and there is an antitoxin/antidote which may be beneficial. Your
