                                  INFORMATION PAPER

        SUBJECT: The Army Surgeon Generalls Medical Chemical Defense Plan

        1. Purpose: To provide information on above subject.

        2. Facts:

            a. Soldiers are provided their basic load of three Mark I
        nerve agent antidote kits and two weeks supply of pyridostigmine
        bromide, the nerve agent pretreatment.

            b. The Combat Lifesaver carries five atropine autoinjectors
        and 10 mg of injectable diazepam in his aid bag.

            c. The Aidman carries ten atropine autoinjectors and 10 mg of
        injectable diazepam.

            d. The battalion aid station, division clearing, and hospitals
        are equipped with the chemical Agent Patient Treatment Sets and the
        Chemical Agent Patient Decontamination Sets. Treatment set
        contains 500 atropine and 100 2-PAM autoinjectors, 100 mg atropine
        solution, steroid ophthalmic ointment, cyanide antidotes (sodium
        nitrite and thiosulfate), suction device, etc. Decon set contains
        decon agent (calcium hypochlorite), buckets, buty aprons and
        gloves, etc.

            e. Care and treatment is outlined in F?4 8-285, Treatment of
        Chemical Casualties. Definitive treatment of chemical patients
        beyond the scope of FM 8-285 is being developed by DASG-HCZ.
