PREVENTIVE MEDICINE SITUATION SUMMARY REPORT
27 OCTOBER to 9 NOVEMBER 1990
1. MISSION: No Change
2. SITUATION AND CONSIDERATIONS
a. Enemy situation: No Change
b. Friendly situation: Status of food sanitation:
Several outbreaks of unspecified diarrhea (i.e. mostly mild with
wat@ stools) associated with consumption of leafy green salad
vegetables (lettuce, cabbage) from non-approved food sources
have been reported among all services. Where night soil and
animal wastes are used as fertilizers low growing leaf and stalk
crops can be heavily contaminated with a variety of pathogens.
Current methods of field disinfection for vegetables described
in TB MED 530 include through washing followed by soaking in
food service disinfectant (NSN 6840-00-810-6396) or a 200 ppm
chlorine solution for 30 minutes. Unit and command medical
authorities may prohibit the use of leafy vegetables for salads
based on local conditions and the availability of approved
sources.
