The data generated showed no Indication of degradation when using the ICD 1536 cream. Both
mask systems had a higher percentage of test results above the required 1667 and 6667 Pi levels.
Based on the database generated, a high degree of certainly exists that the ICD 1536 cream wi:l not
adversely affect the seal of the tested masks.
The second phase of the evaluation concerned the affect the ICD 1536 cream might have on the
mask materials. To evaluate these possible effects, three material properties were Identified; tensile
strength, ultimate elongation and tension set. The test plan developed called for exposure of lost slabs
(coupons) to the [CD 1536 cream for 6 and 12 hour periods. Seven different mask materials are being
evaluated: M40 silicone. M17 natural rubber, and frve M43 natural rubber/bromobutyl blends (2FOl.
2FOS, 2FO7, 2F)C( and 2FXY). Coupons for the test apparatus from the M 1 7 and ?A.;3 -.nasks '-.a@ a L -an
prepared and exposed. The M40 material samples will be prepared and tested In the near future. Five
coupons will be evaluated In each of the test conditions for a totaj of 210 tests (frve sample x three
exposure levels x seven materials x two tests):
Material Properties Test Matrix

Exposure Control 6 hours 12 hours
Tensile Strength 5 5 5

Testing has been initiated and should be completed by 7 Sep 1990.
C. Proposed Future Tests.
1. Complete the materials compatibility evaluation.
2. Evaluate the effect on protection of du@ dirt and sand In conjunction with the use of ICD
1536 cream In the sealing area of the mask.
3. Evaluate the effect on protection of high temperatures In conjunction with the use of [CD 1536
cream In the sealing area of the mask.
5. CONCLUSIONS
,k Detection.
The ICD 1536 cream will give false positive results on the M8AI AJarm, the CAM, the M8 paper,
and the M256 and M256Al detector kits. The ICD 1536 cream will not, give any false positive results on
the M9 paper. We do not recommend using the ICD 1536 cream In operations that require the use of
the CAM, the M8 paper, the M256 or M256Al kits. The soldiers could use the ICD 1536 cream when
using the MOAI alarm as long as they are careful not to contaminate the M43AI detector with the ICD
1536 cream. They must check for contamination by operating the alarm for a minute after h Is set up. If
no alarm sounds the detector Is can be used.
