            1. (U) Anthrax: Amthra;, is a bacteria. Anthrax may appear in three forms
in man: cutaneous, pulmonary and intestinal, Transmission of the disease is
generally through scratches or abrasions of the skin, wounds, inhalation of
spares, or L-ating improperly cooked meat. It is not transferable from man to
man. In spore form, anthrax may be disseminated as an aerosol. Anthrax spores
are considered to be extremely persistent.

                     (a) (U) Incubation Period. The incubation period is from one tc)
seven days, usually less than four days. In pulmonary cases, this incubation
period may be less than 24 hours.

                     (b) (U) Mortality. In man, the mortality rate of untreated
cutaneous anthrax ranges up to 25 percent. In pulmonary anthrax, mortality
           rate approaches 170 percent.

                     (c) (U) Persistency. Anthrax is very stable under proper
conditions but is destroyed by sunlight within three hours and decomposes in
           air within twelve hours.

                     (d) (U) Symptoms.

                          (1) (U) Cutaneous - Itching of exposed skin followed by a
lesion. Lesion will develop within 2-6 days into a depressed black eschar.
May cause a form of blood poisoning.

                          (2) (U) Pulmonary Malaise, fatigue muscle pain, fever,
           non-productive cough.

                          (3) (U) Intestinal Acute abdominal distress, fever and
           death.

II. (U) Botulinum Toxin. Botulinum toxin is a chemical produced by
bacteria. It may appear as a colorless to white powder ne6dle-like crystal.
It is water soluble and stable in solution for seven days. Transmission of
s disease is generally through the contamination a+ food. However, in it's
powder form, it may lend itself to inhalation or contamination of wounds. This
is normally achieved when disseminated as an aerosol. It is not transferable
           from man to man.

                     (a) (U) Incubation Period. Initial symptoms are usually observed
about 12 to 72 hours after ingestion. Symptoms may occur 3-36 hours after
           inhalation of massive doses.

                     (b) (U) Mortality Rate. Mortality rate is 60-70%. Recovery time
is very slow and can take from 4 days to 6 months.

                     (c) (U) Persistency. BotulinLim toxin is considered to be
nonpersistent due to solar effects in the environment. This toxin is destroyed
           within three hours in sunlight.

                     (d) (U) Symptoms. Blurred vision, generalized weakness, difficulty
           in speaking and swallowing.
