                        THE MEDICAL MANAGEMENT OF CHEMICAL
                              CASUALTIES COURSE (M2C3)

             The Medical Management of Chemical Casualties Course, M2C3,
       is conducted     by the US Army Medical         Research Institute of
       Chemical Defense for the Army Surgeon General.           It is the only
       formal   postgraduate medical education in this field in the
       Department of Defense. Conducte--' at Aberdeen Proving Ground for
       over 20 vears.     the course normally trains 500 physicians           and
       other health professionals yearly.
             The course at home station consists of 5 days of classroom,
       practical.   and   field instruction     on  mechanisms of action and
       medica-- defense     against chemical       warfare agents,        medical
       operations in a chemical environment, patient decontamination and
       evacuation, and common-sense training of field medical@ soldiers.
       The co,-,-se includes students of all services and of many allied
       nations.    Graduation requires passing a challenging examination
       with a pass rate for physicians of about 80% at home station.
       Graduates gain the knowledge and confidence needed to op-erate
       effective chemical casualty care systems.         The course is an Army
       professional military education Officer Record Brief entry and is
       now a pre-command requirement for Army Medical Corps officers.
             In September 1990 the CINC,     USCENTCOM directed execution of
       this course in theater for all US     medical elements and attachment
       of a course faculty cell to the       CENTCOM staff.      Instruction in
       theater involved completion of all requirements of the normal             5
       day course in 3 days,      including over 40 hours of instruction,

       effort   focused first on medical elements of Army and             ?Iarine
       divisions and other forward deployed units.
             From 12 Oct 90 through 13 Dec         90.   16 M2C3 courses were
       conducted in the AOR,         The examination pass rate was          96%.
       Graduates   totaled 1453,     including   677 military physicians, 96
       ?As, and 61. civilian physicians-      The additional graduates were
       dental,   nurse corps, MSC,       and  chemical officers and senior
       enlisted medical specialists.          Allied graduates from Saudi
       Arabia. UK.   France, Canada,    and the UAE made up 273 of          this
       total.    In response to a CINCCE:NT      request, predeployment     M2C3
       instruction is now underway in Germany and CONUS for later
       deploying units of all services.
