MEDICAL MANAGEMENT OF CHEMICAL CASUALTIES COURSE

                                  INTRODUCNON AND SELF-STUDY GUIDE

                                                NOVEM13ER 1990

            1. OBJECTIVE

The purpose of this introduction to a condensed Medical Management of
Chemical Casualties Course (M2C3) is to orient you to key issues and leaming
            objectives.

M2C3 is normally presented as a 5 day course of instruction at the U.S. Army
Medical Research Institute of Chen-dcal Defense, Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD. In
the normal format there is adequate time for initial familiarization with the subject
matter and progression to achieve a strong level of proficiency in chemical casualty care.
Successful course completion provides continuing education credit for physicians,
physician's assistants, and nurses, and is recorded as a professional military education
entry on the Officer Record Brief of Army officers. Recently the Army Surgeon General
made successful M2C3 completion a requirement for command positions for Medical
            Corps officers.

M2C3 instruction is a key component of combat medical readiness for United
States and allied forces deployed in Operation Desert Shield. At the direction of the
Commander in Chief, U.S. Central Command, in-theater instruction of military health
professionals has produced 800 M2C3 graduates at the time of this writing. Experience
shows that M2C3 graduates can sharpen the readiness of their units for chemical casualty
care in about two weeks after completing the instruction.

Clearly, deploying units need M2C3-trained health professionals as soon as
possible to build this readiness. Operational requirements do not now permit a normal
and, ftill comprehension of the subject matter has
never been more important. 'ne best solution for the present need is to provide the full
course content in a concentrated format over 2 to 3 very challenging days of classroom
and practical instruction to well-prepared students. 'nis study guide is intended to assist
you in that preparation. You will need about 20 hours of self-study to adequately
prepare for the condensed M2C3 course. There is no question that the preparation will
involve a real sacrifice of your rapidly-diminishing personal time prior to deployment.
You can be assured, however, that the preparation will ensure your success in this
course, and more importantly, your ability to survive, to provide the care your soldiers
need and the leadership your medics need in a chemical threat environment.

Students entering condensed M2C3 instruction will provide evidence of adequate
preparation by submitting the completed self-study question sets provided in this pre-
course material. Successful graduates will be awarded the same continuing education
