credits and professional military education credential as graduates of the normal M2C3
course.
2. COURSE CONTENT- WHAT TO EXPECT
M2C3 is a combination of classroom and hands-on practical instruction focusing
on medical management issues. It is taught at a postgraduate medical level, but senior
enlisted medical soldiers often participate and do well in the course.
The course begins with an introduction to basic definitions and an orientation to
the history and recent evolution of the chemical threat. 'ne current course then
provides a threat assessment focusing on Iraqi chemical weapons and capabilities, and on
lessons learned from the recent Gulf War on effective chemical casualty care. 'Me
threat chemical warfare agents considered in depth include the nerve agents, cyanide,
and the blister agents with special reference to sulfur mustard.
A combination of classwork, video presentations, and practical exercises addresses
the topics of survival and medical operations in a chemical environment, patient
decontamination and evacuation, and medical personal and collective protection, as well
as clinical decision-making under pressure in a triage exercise with simulated casualties.
The respiratory tract as a common target for a variety of agents and hazardous
battlefield corn ounds is reviewed as well.
. p
Successful completion requires passing an examination which has had a pass rate
of about 80% among students in the normal course. Interestingly, the 'pass rate among
students deployed in Operation Desert Shield has exceeded 95%. After the examination,
a nontested orientation to new research and development initiatives in medical chemical
defense concludes the course.
