S. Previous shortage of latrines resolving. Four hole
sit-down latrines with drum; pumped by contractor X 2 daily.
9. Water supply from fixed facility source. Desalination
plant - takes raw water with 3000 total dissolved solids (TDS)
down to 325 TDS. (Potable water can be no higher than 1200).
Chlorine residuals lower than in U.S., fixed installation water
but no positive bacterial contamination observed. I
10. Plies remain a significant problem - spraying with Dursban
and diazinon.
11. Malaria not a problem on east coast.
12. "Tell everyone in PM that the basics of the medical threat
(heat, diarrhea, insects, etc.,) are not exaggerated and the
attention given to waste disposal, water, food, housing, and
vector control is not misplaced. Basic stuff is crucial."
13. Morning showers are very refreshing.
ADDENDUM: Later letter talks about some disciplinary problp"n
appearing, i.e., theft of weapons, assault, and medic "shooting
up with morphine.11
