generally embedded with particulate matter (dirt or sand),, or
after 8 hours.
C. Skin Surface coverage. When applying TSP to the akin,
first priority should be given to covering those area& of the
body ad4&Cent to the closures of the battledreas overgarment
(BDO) : the neck, wrists. and ankles-lower 1*gx. Additional TS?
may be applied to the arm pits, groin area, cr*asea of the
buttocks, and around the walst. The effect of TSP on wound
healing is not known; therefore, do not apply TSP to open wounds
or remove bandages to apply TSP to them& area.
3. Use of Topical Skin Prot&ctant with other Nuclear, Biological,
or Chemical Protective Material.
a. M17 or M40 Protective Mask. Use of TS? and the
protective mask together does not require any change in doctrine
on the uae of the protective m"k.The TS? does not interfere with
the sealing capability of the protective mask. No loge of vision
(much as eye Irritation or togging on the mask lonm) Is expected.
The TS? has a very slight vinegar odor, which is neither
nauseating nor objectionable.
b. Battle Drena Overgarment. Use of TSP should not reduce
the effectiveness of the BDO. Contamination of the active r*xin
In the BDO with the small amount of water in TSP is expected to
be minor when TSP is used as directed.
C. Chemical Agent detection Systems. Under prolonged or
close range monitoring of TSP coated skin with the automatic
datectors (?48AI detector or Ch*mioal Agent Monitor [CAM]), false
positive 0-agent &14Lrmgs may register. The chemical agent
detector! VGH, ABC-MS paper indicates & Positive O-Ag&nt response
ely on the paper. Topical Skin
Protectant does not give a false ponitlv* with the M206 Chemical
detector kit, nor does TS? give false alarms for mustard agents
on any of the fielded detection Systems. The importance of false
alarms with TS? depend on:
(1) The amount of TS? present on the monitored
individual or equipment.
(2) The individuals adherence to doctrine on the use
of cheraic&l agent 46t&otora.
(3) Impact on mission caused by decontamination
following a false alarm on the detectors.
cl. M25SAI or M291 Skin Decontaminating Kits. The use of
TSP Improvem the efficiency of personnel decontaminating systems.
Service members Should perform skin decontamination immediately
after chemical contamination, an the effectiveness of TSP
decreased with tizne. During decontamination, TSP protected skin
areas must have an much of the TS? removed &a possible. If not
removed, there Is a rink that the V*aic&nt &$ant will be forced
Into the remaining barrier film causing secondary exposure to
underlying skin.
4. Steps for Applying Topical Skin Protectant
a6. In the event that off the shelf commercially packaged
TS? is procured, do not use the application instructions which
are intended for industrial occupations. A new stick on label
with military use Instructions will be applied over the
commercial instructions. Procurement of A &and colored contalntr
