Subject: PREVENTIVE MEDICINE UPDATE FROM 'SO II SIUDI
THE FOLLOWING IS A P@IVE MEDICINE UPDATE FROM LTC BILL ANREWS 11 His
PW OF SAUDI ARABIL.
Date: Tue. 5 Feb 91 17:47:21 SAT
From: CPT RAFFA 30TH )(ED GRP -
*itten By: LTC Andrews, O$P, with 30TH KED GRP, Somewhere in Saudi Arabia
to date, there have-i't been too many PM problems. lfe've been
blessed (111) with cool (COLD?) weather that's keep the fly,
mosquito, sandfly, *,id rodent population down. Le it *arms up,
however, we expect the populations to explode.
Sanitation at the various 2d COSCO)(/332 i(ED BDE units we're
coveri,ig has been fair to good. Command emphasis seers to be
there, there's just a long list of other things to Oe doie in
preparation for the move north.
There is a general lack of FgTs in all units visited and none
have any FST equipi4ent or supplies. The supply system is also
unable to get them because of the need for other things such as
bullets.
?be Divisions appear to have pretty good PM assets and are fairly
aggressive in accomplishing their PM mission. I didn't really
expect this.
We're using locally constructed showers And burn-out latrines.
Drainage from aboverit goes Into sumps where It SLOWLY percolates
into the ground or evaporates. Sumps have to be 8 -12 it deep to
get adequate percolation. Engineer support to construct these
sumps is where-ever we can go find It. Save condition for
protective bunkers. Evaporation beds for the hospitals have beet
requested but will probably never be provided unless a problem
develops which it probably will when the action starts.
Trash and garbage is being burned and buried in pits. No real
problems in this area yet.
Infectious waste policy is to bury it in a separate pit. ve've
requested Incline plane incinerators be built for all the EVACS.
To date, no one has helped construct or provide these. 2D COSCOM
Eng did propose locally purchasing incinerators for each of our
EVACS, CS&, and MM. I let then know how stupid and wasteful
that would have beef% and got them to cancel their idea. It would
have taken until July to have the purchase contract.
