permits. If possible during the hottest part of the day, soldiers dig a
hole in the sand. spread out their insect nets and rest. The insect nets
are required due to the large amount of flies and other biting insects in
                the area.

                        c. Field Waste:

                                 - Garbage and refuse is currently being stacked and stored
while officials attempt to establish a disposal contract. This is
creating large numbers of flies to be attracted/bred.

                                 - Field latrines are 'deep p4ts'. It was uncertain
exactly how deep these latrines were or the exact construction. The
latrines were also attracting large numbers of flies.

                           d. Insects:

                                 - Due to the conditions mentioned with the field wastes.
flies are an enormous problem. The soldiers interviewed did not know
                about control measures.

                                 - Sand flies are a big problem. This is why the soldiers
used insect bars when resting during the heat of the day. The soldiers
reported that sleeping wth your mouth open and without insec- nets
resulted in flies in your mouth and up your nose.

                                 - Soldiers are issued insect nets and repellant and both
                are being used.

                        e. Field Hygiene: Many problems noted in this area.

                                 - The soldiers identified a lack of showers. The shower
ratio was I shower head per 300-500 personnel.

                                 - Most personnel received a shower about.every 9 days.

                                 - No handwashing facilities were available. water in unit
         areas was for drinking only.

                                 - Field laundries are in place and operating. Soiled
clothing is turned in twice per week and is ready within 3 days.

                                 - The soldiers interviewed recommended bringing numerous
pairs of socks so that you could keep your feet dry. Foot problems were
                common due to the heat.

                           f. Injuries:

                                 - Most injuries were from training accidents. broken bones
                and asthma.

                                 - There were also reports of accidental injection with
                atropine.

                               Other information:
