                                                 **Start of Message
The following information was obtained by SSG Oates, LARMC Preventive
Medicine Activity from soldiers who had been MEDEVAC'ed from Saudi Arabia.

The personnel interviewed stated that the living/field conditions were
different depending on location and rapidly changing. The soldiers
interviewed were some of the first troops deployed. The most common thing
the soldiers mention wag that the heat was like nothing you could ever
                 experience anywhere else.

                 Field Conditions:

                           a. Water:

                                   - there are very few water trailers (400 gal) being used.

                                   - individuals are not required to use iodine or other
methods to disinfect their individual water

                       - locally procured bottled water is issued to the soldiers
on a daily basis. The water is either delivered by truck or air dropped.
Most soldiers were issued 4 small bottles and two large ones (exact sizes
                 were unknown).

                                   - the soldiers best advice to deploying troops about water
was to learn to drink a lot of hot (90 F) water prior to deployment.
There are no facilities for soldiers to cool water in theater.

                         b. Heat Injuries:

                                    - some heat injuries are occurring, but Commanders are
                 enforcing water consumption.

work/rest cycles are being utilized when the situation
