Inhalation anthrax is an almost uniformly fatal disease.
14*rianca with this syndrome in humans is limited; what

information in available indicates that once cloarout symptoms

and signs emerge, even massive doses of antibiotics are futile.

There is no question that the bast approach to the threat of

i@lation anthrax is activt i=unization prior to @osurs,

possibly coupled with use of antibiotics after exposure, In the

absence of widely available vaccine, however, administration of

appropiata antibiotics prior to exposure, or in tha immediate

p*st-exposuro period, offers a secondary option which could
improve survival, particularly if antibiotic use is combined with
immunization in the post-wtasuro period. Rationale for this
position is based on the following f&c-.st a) the JA vitro
sensitivity of Bacillus anthracia to ctrtain antiblotioel D) the

demonstrated utility of antibiotics in treatment of ogtantaus

anthrax, and (probably most importantly) c) results of

experiments in non-h=an primates which indicate clearly that

antibiotics administered after exposure to lethal challenge with
anthrax sports will prevent disease while they are being given
(and may reduce mortality if continued for a sufficient period of

             time).
