The vast zajority of anthrax strains are sensitive J&
to penicillin. Historically, this drug has bean considered the
"tr*atmant of choictit fo.r all forms of anthrax; tetracycline,

orythromycinj and chloramphanicol have boon recommended in
           p@icillin-allargic patients. Rare panicillin-resistant *train&
*XiSt naturally, however, and one has boon recovered from a fatal

human case. In addition, it is not difficult to induca

resistance to both penicillin and tetracycline through laboratory
manipulation of anthrax bacilli. ciprofloxacin is a relatively
now antibiotic with a novel mach @ am of action (DNA gyrase

inhibitor). To datat all strains of anthrax tested have proven
quite sensitive (1,2). Because this in a relatively new drug,

and bscauss of its unusual mechanism of action, it is unlikely

that resistance harm been "engineered" at this time. Therefore,
cipratioxacin, a drug with few recognized side effects, a
convenient oral doming schedule (twice daily), and sxcallent
activity both Ja vitro and in @ offers a good option for

antibiotic use in countering possible infection with this

organism. Many of those same arguments can be made for

doxycyclina as well; however, the m*thoda for engineering

resistance to tetracyclines are simple and readily available in

the open literature. This combined with recognized
