         SUBJECT: Projected Vaccine and Antitoxin Production (U)


         1.  @ Purpose. To provide update on the projected production of
         anthrax and botulinum vaccines and botulinum antitoxin.

         2. (U) Facts.

             a.  @ Three graphs are provided on the projected production
         of anthrax and botulinum vaccines and botulinum antitoxin (Encls
         1-3, respectively). Doses of vaccines are provided to allow for
         flexibility of planning.

             b.  @ For Operation Desert Shield (ODS) service members were
         given a two dose anthrax vaccination series because of the shortage
         of vaccine stocks. A normal vaccination series is three doses
         given two weeks apart and a booster given every six months
         thereafter. A three dose botulinum vaccination series was given in
         ODS with a recommended booster after 12 months.

             c.  @ Treatment of service members exposed to anthrax before
         the appearance of symptoms is for them to complete their
         vaccination series.
         m           -
             e.  @ Additional production of botulinum vaccine is projected
         for Jun-Jul 91 timeframe (Encl 2). Note that the botulinum vaccine
         is the pentavalent variety which immunizes against the A-E strain.
         Production of this vaccine is like producing five different types
         of vaccines and mixing into one injection.

             f.  @ There are                          the heptavalent
         antitoxin available,                          Fort Detrick. The
         projected production in enclosure 3 is the quadrivalent type (ABEF)
         which is the greatest threat to service members.
