                                    INFORMATION PAPER

        SUBJECT: Recovery of Biological Warfare Vaccines/Antitoxin (U)

        1. (U) Purpose. To provide information on the medical products
        recovered from the Area of Responsibility (AOR).

        2. (U) Facts.

            a. (U) MAJ William Cline and CPT William Whitten from the U.S.
        Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Disease (USAMRIID)
        departed to the 47th MEDSOM in the AOR on 1 May 91 and returned with
        on hand vaccines and antitoxin on 10 May 91.

            b.       The following table shows the total number of doses of
        each product sent into the AOR and the number of doses retrieved.

                doses were continuously maintained at the 47th MEDSOM.

            c.       The anthrax vaccine is a Food and Drug Administration
        (FDA) approved product with a one year expiration date once delivered
        to the user. The botulinum toxoid and antitoxin are both FDA
        approved investigational new drugs (IND) without an expiration date.

            d.       On 17 Apr 91, the refrigeration unit housing the stocks
        of anthrax vaccine, botulinum toxoid and botulinum antitoxin
        malfunctioned. As a result, the anthrax vaccine will be held in
        suspended status until it reaches its expiration date. if an urgent
        requirement occurs prior to their expiration date, these stocks will
        be retested to determine usability. The IND botulinum toxoid and
        antitoxin will be maintained and tested periodically for usability,
roduct management procedures.

            e. t"    As a result of continual production, current levels of
        these products in the CONUS base are as             5 USC 552(b)(1)

                 doses of the botulinum toxoid are in the final stages
        of potency testing prior to release by manufacturer.
