File: 120596_aacgt_01.txtLessons Learned/After Action Report from Operation Desert Shield DOTL DOT DO IN TURN - 1. The pre-deployment preparation and the deployment phase of Operation Desert Shields life support operation was an complete success. There were problem areas that could be improved when a future deployment occurs. - A. Pre-deployment Preparation: We were instructed in the pre-deployment briefing to plan for a 180 day deployment. Mobility bins were packed to the maximum extent possible. Parts and supplies ran short on the second month of the deployment. PROBLEM: Due to the length of the deployment and the allocated pallet positions a unit could never bring an infinite amount of supplies. SOLUTION: Upon arrival at the deployed location, set up several channels to obtain parts and supplies. Notify home station of shortages. B. Fabrication shop performs the periodic inspection of flotation devices and parachutes. Life Preservers inspection cycle - 180 days parachutes - 120 days, life rafts - 210 days. Equipment came due inspection while at the F08. PROBLEM: There was no place to inspect equipment IAW the applicable directives. There was a fabrication specialist that deployed to the FOB. Inspection of equipment was limited to parachutes -only. There was a directive from CENTAF to send equipment to GERMANY for periodic inspection. Three months was the minimum turn around time for equipment sent to Germany. SOLUTION: Proper fabrication set-up and manning at the Forward operating Location will alleviate the problem. C. Lateral Support of either units Aircraft. PROBLEM: AFRES did not deploy enough equipment as stated in MACR 55-22. This led to swapping out equipment from plane to pi?? and between missions. There was also a problem with redress as we only deployed with enough of chemical gear for our crews. SOLUTION: Deploying units need to properly configure aircraft' before leaving home station and bring extra chemical equipment for their crew members. .
