         MEDICAL INTELLIGENCE (U)

         1. (U) The principal medical factors which affect military operations in
         the ADR are:

             a. (U) perfqrmgd e@O.Urgidation duets hpal. Without
         countermeasures, beat will cause *ajor incapacitation, especially In
         unacclizatL-6 troops. The intense heat of summer (3une through September)
         averages 27 - 46 degrees Celsius (82 - 115 degrees Fahrenheit) with
         temperatures frequently exceeding 49 degrees Celsius (120 degrees
         Fahrenheit). There is no surface water. Deep wells and oases are
         sparse. Water will have to be supplied. Soldiers may have to consume
         (including meal Preparation) up to four (4) gallons of potable water daily
         to prevent dehydration and heat injury. Salt tablets are unnecessary and
         could be detrimental. Acclimatization may be precluded by the tactical
         situation, but should be practiced to the maximum degree possible.
         Goggles and ointments should be used to lessen the effects of wind and
         sun.

                 (1)        osquitoes. Malaria is not considered a medical threat
         within our AD. The following providence are considered malaria free: ASH
         SHARQIYAH. AR RIYAD, AL HUDUO ASH SHANALIYAH, AL JAWF. Malaria is not
         considered a threat In BAHRAIN, KUWAIT, QATAR. JORDAN or UNITED ARAB
         EMIRATES. ttalaria is a potential threat in southwestern provinces of
         SAUDIA ARABIA, YETIEN, OMAN and in the northern provinces of IRAQ (DANUK.
but has
         not beer. reported for several years. Sindbis Fever has been isolated from
         mosquitoes along the coast in the eastern province, but human cases have
         not been reported recently. Personal countermeasures. Including the use
         of repellents, should be encouraged. Preventive medicine teams should be
         deployed to suppress the vector population as early as possible.

                (2) (U) landflies. Conditions in towns and villages are
         conducive to the propagation of large populations of sandflies from April
         to November, resulting In a threat from sandfly fever and skin
         inflammatiorts. The incidence for sandfly Fever is low. Sandflies have
