         2. (U) Operation DESERT SHIELD/STORM conducted by CENTCOM on
         05/14/91.


         3. (U) KEYWORDS: COMMUNICATIONS


         4. (U) TITLE: Communications in Engineer Battalion

         5. (U) OBSERVATION: To work effectively the Bn needed commo
         augmentation of RATT, MUX; Squad Radios also needed.

         6. (U) DISCUSSION: Given distances between our elements, we
         could not operate on FM alone. We were loaned a RATT rig which
         proved very useful. We could not access MUX without our own
         node/station. Our HOs is too large to colocate with DMAIN and
         no other units with MUX stations set up near where we needed to
         be ie. just behind Bde rear boundary. Eventually we got a MUX
         node attached to us.


         7. (U) LESSON LEARNED: RATT and MUX are vital to good commo for
         Engr Bn.

         S. (U) RECOMMENDED ACTION: 82d Sig earmarks RATT and MUX
         detachments for 307 EN BN. Use same elements in all training to
         establish habitual relationships.
