                              UNCLASSIFIED 05/17/9,
                            JULLS LONG REPORT

         1. (U) JULLS NUMBER: 51447-86348 (00006), submitted by 307 ENG
         (WABGAA), MAJ Nelson, 239-7880, (919)432-7880.

         2. (U) Operation DESERT SHIELD/STORM conducted by CENTCOM on
         05/14/91.

         3. (U) KEYWORDS: PLATOON MANNING, ALERT

         4. (U) TITLE: Line Platoon Manning Upon Alert

         5. (U) OBSERVATION: Moving personnel to man the DRB line
platoons at 100% strength during the alert/deployment phase
caused many problems, especially +or the -Follow-up platoons.

         6. (U) DISCUSSION: Other companies in the battalion were
stripped of personnel and equipment so B/307 EN could accompany
2d Bde at 100% strength. The battalion had to reorganize later
in Saudi Arabia so other units could have adequate readiness.
We had to attach two Corps engineer platoons to A/307 EN so they
could support Ist Bde's deployment. Team cohesion and property
accountability suffered as a result of these reorganizations.

         7. (U) LESSON LEARNED: N/A

         S. (U) RECOMMENDED ACTION: Division must identify early how
much of the division will deploy. This will give the Bn
Commander an opportunity to make the best decision for
resourcing the deployment. He can send three slightly
understrength companies to support division, or one full-up
(leaving two very understrength ones) to support a brigade.

         9. (U) COMMENTS: NONE

         10. (U) SUBJECT: DEPLOYMENT

         11. (U) Action managed by: CALL, action worked by: , RAP number:
               Lesson distributed by: DIVISION.
