         2. (U) Operation DESERT SHIELD/STORM conducted by CENTCOM on
         05/14/91.

         3. (U) KEYWORDS: DEPLOYING, ENGINEER EQUIPMENT'

         4. (U) TITLE: Deploying Engineer Equipment

         5. (U) OBSERVATION: By identifying late the need for ship space
         an which to send unit equipment we were short our mission
         essential equipment for a long time.

         6. (U) DISCUSSION% We missed the opportunity to get battalion
         equipment deployed early by sea to SWA. This happened as we
         debated what and how much would go by air. Division movement
         planners must understand that to move the entire battalion by
         air it would take 91 x C-141B equivalent sorties. Rarely Would
         an engineer battalion be allocated such numbers.

         7. (U) LESSON LEARNED: N/A

         S. (U) RECOMMENDED ACTION: Identify early how much of the
         division will deploy. If the whole division is to go, bid early
         for shipping. Do not count on air frames to move engineer
         equipment.
