          05/14/91.

          3. (U) KEYWORDS: DEPLOYMENT, NOTIFICATION

          4. (U) TITLE: Deployment Notification

          5. (U) OBSERVATION: Need for a mechanism to notify single
          soldiers next of kin of deployment of soldier.

          6. (U) DISCUSSION: Currently a mechanism exists (the Family
          Support Group) to notify spouses of the deployed status of their
          spouse. No such mechanism exists for the single soldier.
          During the deployment, many of our single soldiers parents
          called wanting to know if their son had deployed. Not knowing
          who the person calling was or not having a way to verify that
          the person an the other end was in fact a relative, we were
          reluctant to pass deployment information.

          7. (U) LESSON LEARNED.- That a means must be developed to allow
          the rear detachment the ability to notify or pass deployment
          information to next of kin of our single soldiers.

          B. (U) RECOMMENDED ACTION: The division/battalion develop a
          notification roster to notify next of kin of deployment of the
          soldier.
