'EDICAL
1. PURPOSE. To prescribe standard procedures for the provision of medical services
for the division and attached units in tactical situations.
2. GENERAL.
a. The mission of the field medical support system la to conserve manpower by
planning, recommending, and supervising the Implementation of measures necessary for
safeguarding the health of the troops and providing medical treatment and rapid
evacuation of the gick and wounded.
b. The Division Surgeon exercises technical control of all medical activities in
the command. The Division Surgeon executes and supervises the implementation of
medical policies egtablished-by higher headquarters, accomplishes medical planning,
and submits medical reports.
c. Unit-level medical service will be performed by medical sections or platoons,
organic to combat elements. Unit level medical support includes preventive medicine
activities, acquisition of the gick and wounded, Emergency Medical Treatment (EMT),
and evacuation from the point of illness or injury to initial professional treatment
at the aid station.
d. Divigion-level medical support is provided by the 24th ID (M) DISCOM. Its
primary functions include evacuating patients from unit-level stations, providing
further medical treatment at clearing stations, and furnishing area modical.gupport.
a. Units without organic medical elements or units operating at a distance from
normal supporting medical units will be supported by the nearest facility on an area
basis.
3. RESPONSIBILITIES.
a. The Division Surgeon 19 responsible for staff supervision and coordination of
medical treatment, evacuation, medical supply, aviation medicine, preventive
medicine, and psychiatric and emergency dental activities within the 24th ID (M). He
also coordinates with other gpecial and general staff officers on the medical civic
tions, tactical and technical intelligence, AMEDD personnel assignment and
employment, training, and medical records and reports. He coordinates with higher
headquarters' surgeon concerning the CORPS-level medical support to the division,
including reinforcement of division medical units or temporary replacements. The
Division Surgeon will normally be located in the D-Main. The Division Surgeon will
prepare the medical annex to Division SOP'G and operations orders.
b. The 24th ID (?4) DISCOM is responsible for providing division-level medical
treatment, evacuation, emergency dental care, emergency-paychiatric care, medical
supply, and organizational nedical equipment maintenance and repair within the
division and preventive medicine service. The DISCOM will provide one medical
company in direct support of each brigade and coordinate augmentation and reinforqtng
medical support from Corps medical units.
