                                   JULLS LONG REPORT

          1. (U) JULLS NUMBER: 42956-14544 (00001), submitted by AVN BDE, 24
          ID, 870-5516, (912)767-5516.

          2. (U) Other OPN DESERT STORM NOTES conducted by 24 IN DIV (MECH)
          on 03/05/91.

          3. (U) KEYWORDS: HELICOPTER DOOR GUNNERS, AIRCREW, AVIATION CREW,
          AIRCRAFT SECURITY, .

          4. (U) TITLE: DOOR GUNNERS

          5. (U) OBSERVATION: OPERATION DESERT STORM has again proven the
absolute neces'sity for trained door gunners on all utility
          helicopters.

          6. (U) DISCUSSION: Without a door gunner, only one side of a
utility helicopter can provide crew observation and supressive
fires. Door gunnery skills, which now include mostly aircrew
and aircraft maintenance procedures, require considerable time
to learn. There is a need to develop complete crews during
          training..

          7. (U) LESSON LEARNED: Providing door gunner personnel on a
crisis basis at the initiation of a contingency operation
results in untrained personnel attempting to perform aircrew
duties under possible combat conditions, and most certainly
under terrain and NVG flight conditions.

          8. (U) RECOMMENDED ACTION: Provide door gunner personnel to the
Aviation Brigade on a long term (six to twelve months) attached
          basis.

              (U) SUBJECT: PERSONNEL

              (U) INTEROPERABILITY: STRUCTURE
