           4. (U) TITLE: INDEPENDENT OPERATIONS OF UNIT MINISTRY TEAMS

           5. (U) OBSERVATION: The mission of the division chaplain unit
           ministry team changes during the battle.

           6. (U) DISCUSSION: When the battle began and units crossed the
           line of departure, the division staff was left in the rear areas
           to monitor and support the actual battle functions.
           Communications, other than the battle staff methods, was next to
           impossible. Most brigade staffs were on their own. The
           Division Chaplain was out of touch with the unit chaplains until
           nine days after the battle began.

           7. (U) LESSON LEARNED: This experience confirmed the training
           method used by 24 ID UMT'S. Each brigade chaplain must perform
           independently to provide religious support.

           S. (U) RECOMMENDED ACTION: Division Chaplains should continue
           to train brigade UMT's to function independently during the
           battle. We should continue to affirm the low-density MOS
           training mission during the pre-battle and post-battle phases by
           the division chaplain UMT.
