            1. '(U) JULLS NUMBER: 51961-63530 (00013), submitted by PUBLIC
            AFFAIRS, 24 ID, 870-5516, (912)767-5516.

            2. (U) No type OPN DESERT STORM NOTES conducted by 24 IN DIV
            on 03/05/91.

            3. (U) KEYWORDS: PUBLIC AFFAIRS, PUBLICITY, PAO, MEDIA,

            4. (U) TITLE: MEDIA COVERAGE OF THE DIVISION

            5. (U) OBSERVATION: The 24 ID PAO supported eight news media
            representatives from six different organizations.

            6. (U) DISCUSSION: On G-day, the media were attached to various
divisional units (with PAO escorts) to provide maximum coverage.
As the division's attack progressed to the Euphrates River,
media personnel were rotated among the units to provide balanced
coverage. These efforts resulted in a multitude of articles and
            stories on the 24 ID.

            7. (U) LESSON LEARNED: Eight news media representatives are too
many for a division PAO to support given the needs peculiar to
each news agency. initially, the CENTCOM Joint Information
Bureau promised that combat media pools would be comprised of
five news media representatives from three agencies. After
being "force-fed" three additional correspondents, 24 ID
successfully supported eight media from six agencies only with
the tremendous support from the leadership of the division.

            S. (U) RECOMMENDED ACTION: Limit the size of the combat media
pools to five personnel from three agencies (TV crew - 3, writer
            - 1, photo - 1).

            9. (U) COMMENTS: Command emphasis on aviation support ensured
            media coverage.
