          4. (U) TITLE: CONTROL MEASURE SIMPLICITY

          5. (U) OBSERVATION: Throughout the execution of OPERATION DESERT
          SHIELD the simple control measures developed by the division and
          brigades enhanced attack helicopter employment.
          6. (U) DISCUSSION: The use of east/west and north/south grid
          lines as limits of advance and to delineate engagement areas
          were simple and effective in Army aviation operations.
          7. (U) LESSON LEARNED: With these simple and quick measures, we
          were able to maximize fires on the enemy without fear of
          fratricide.

          S. (U) RECOMMENDED ACTION: Simplicity of plans and hasty
          control measures must continue to be emphasized. When terrain
          features are not available, grid lines are an effective means of
          controlling assets on the battlefield.
