                                       J=S LONG REPORT

             1. (U) S NM4BER: 52154-15005 (00014), submitted by 2 BDE, 24
             ID, 870-5516, (912)767-5516.

             2. (U) No type OPN DESERT STORM NOTES conducted by 24 IN DIV
             on 03/05/91.

             3. (U) KEYWORDS: MANEUVER, FORMATIONS, BATTLE DRILL,

             4. (U) TITLE: CONTROL OF BATTALION TASK FORCES DURING BRIGADE
             MO

             5. (U) OBSERVATION: A brigade night movement to contact through
unfamiliar enemy terrain is difficult, even with a full moon.

             6. (U) DISCUSSION: The brigade used a standard brigade vea
formation throughout the operation. In front of the Vee were
two balanced task forces that allowed the brigade to meet the
enemy with a combination of tanks and infantry. The base of the
brigade Vee was held by a pure armor battalion (minus one
company) and was also the brigade reserve. This formation was
used during all brigade level training prior to OPERATION DESERT
STORM. The brigade battle drill from this standard formation was
for the lead battalion to fix the enemy, the adjacent task force
would then destroy the enemy, with the follow-on battalion held
in reserve and used if required or, more preferably, allowed to
sweep around and continue the momentum of the attack.

             7. (U) RECOMMENDED ACTION: Brigade movement must be kept simple
             and rehearsed.

                 (U) SUBJECT: OPERATIONS

                 (U) INTEROPERABILITY: DOCTRINE
