          4. (U) TITLE: FORWARD SUPPORT BATTALIONS FOR ARTILLERY AND
          AVIATION UNITS

          5. (U) OBSERVATION: Direct support maintenance was not available
          for an artillery brigade until after the cease fire. The
          aviation brigade was not capable of sustained maintenance and
          resupply combat service support operations.

          6. (U) DISCUSSION: The artillery brigade was entirely dependent
          on a corps support group that could not move at the pace of the
          battle. The heavy division's aviation brigade is a maneuver
          brigade and the division's most responsive combat maneuver
          force. As currently resourced, it was incapable of sustained
          maintenance and resupply operations.

          7. (U) RECOMMENDED-ACTION: The mechanized infantry and armored
          division aviation brigade and the field artillery brigade should
          both have a forward support battalion that replicates the
          function performed by its maneuver brigade counterpart but
          tailored to the aviation or field artillery mission.
