            2. (U) No type OPN DESERT STORM NOTES conducted by 24 IN DIV (iq
            on 05/23/91.

            3. (U) KEYWORDS: RESUPPLY, LOGISTICS, TRANSPORTATION,

            4. (U) TITLE: RESUPPLY OVER EXTENDED DISTANCES

            5. (U) OBSERVATION: Long distances for resupply in Iraq put a
heavy strain an division / COSCOM transportation assets.

            6. (U) DISCUSSION: Throughout both DESERT SHIELD and DESERT
STORM, transportation assets were very heavily taxed,
relying on significant host nation transportation support. This
was particularly critical during DESERT STORM when hundreds of
miles of unimproved dirt roads kept truck drivers continuously
behind the wheel. Had there been a serious enemy effort to
interdict our supply line or had offensive operations continued
much longer, serious logistic resupply problems could have
developed as transportation assets broke down or were destroyed.

            7. (U) LESSON L ED: -The very survival of the division is
dependent upon its transportation assets. More transportation
assets are needed within the division.

            S. (U) RECOMMENDED ACTION: Recommend that TO&E changes be
submitted so that the MSB and FSB's can be significantly beefed
up with RET'S, lowboys, cargo & fuelers. FSB's need
organic transportation assets. The MSB's organic transportation
assets cannot sustain a division in the desert with few hard
.
