                                       JMLS LONG REPORT

            1. (U) JULLS NUMBER: 42956-66844 (00002), submitted by DIVARTY/
            -PA, 24 ID, 870-5516, (912)767-5516.

            2. (U) Other OPN DESERT STORM NOTES conducted by 24 IN DIV (MECH)
            on 03/05/91.

            3. (U) KEYWORDS: FUEL, AMMUNITION, ARTILLERY, SUPPLY,

            4. (U) TITLE: FUEL AND AMMUNITION HAUL CAPABILITY IN FIELD
            ARTILLERY BATTALIONS

            5. (U) OBSERVATION* There is a lack of fuel and ammunition haul
capability and mobility in field artillery battalions.

            6. (U) DISCUSSION: The division artillery supports maneuver
brigades that have more fuel haul capability and therefore can
outrange the artillery in the offense. In OPERATION DESERT
SHIELD, organic fuel and ammunition haul assets failed to
maintain pace with the battle. At the time of the cease fire,
artillery vehicles were critically low on fuel. One artillery
brigade commander imposed ammunition restraints on MLRS and 811
RAP because of the difficulty in pushing ammunition forward. .

            7. (U) LESSON LEARNED: The technique of drawing fuel from DSD,
RSD, OR FOB proved to be insufficient to satisfy demands.

            8. (U) RECOMMENDED ACTION: The HEMMT was a winner on this
battlefield. Provide HEMMT fuel tankers to the artillery
separate battery fuel sections. In addition, increase the fuel
and ammunition haul capability of the artillery battalions.

                 (U) SUBJECT: LOGISTICS

                 (U) INTEROPERABILITY: STRUCTURE
