          on 03/05/91.
          3. (U) KEYWORDS: CO@ERBATTERY, MOBILITY, MAINTENANCE, ARTILLERY,

          4. (U) TITLE: MOBILITY AND MAINTENANCE OF ARTILLERY RADARS

          5. (U) OBSERVATION: The counterbattery radars lack mobility and
          are difficult to maintain.

          6. (U) DISCUSSION: The Q-36 and Q-37 radars made counterbattery
fires overwhelmingly successful. However, the mobility for both
systems must be improved. For example, the antenna for the Q-37
radar is mounted on a short wheel base trailer which makes it
very hard to pull in sandy/muddy terrain. The radar is
restricted to hard'surface roads because of this trailer.
Additionally, we have developed a- maintenance program on the
Q-37 that requires too much interface with the Hughes and CECOM
representatives. We do not have a PLL that supports the radar.
Two of four radars were down during offensive operations.

          7. @U),RECOMMENDED ACTION: The Q-37 radar antenna needs to be
mounted on a HEMTT-type vehicle to increase its mobility. The
Army must develop a combat PLL and the maintenance expertise to
          adequately support radar operations.
