OMLS LONG REPORT
1. (U) JTJLLS NUMBER: 52059-85813 (00012), submitted by FIRE
SUPPORT OFF, 24 ID, 870-5516, (912)767-5516.
2. (U) No type OPN DESERT STORM NOTES conducted by 24 IN DIV (Ml
on 05/20/91.
3. (U) KEYWORDS: FIELD ARTILLERY, M548 AMMUNITION CARRIER,
MOBILITY, .
4. (U) TITLE: M548 AMMUNITION CARRIER
5. (U) OBSERVATION: The M548 ammunition carrier is incapable of
supporting sustained, fast-moving artillery operations.
6. (U) DISCUSSION: The M548's engine is not powerful enough to
move the vehicle quickly when combat loaded, especially
Cross-country. Carriers had to be loaded at only 50%-60% of
listed capacity; otherwise, vehicle speed was unacceptably slow.
The current.fleet is also very old, with frequent maintenance
problems.
7. (U) LESSON L ED: M548's hindered fire support operations
on DESERT STORM by restricting the mobility of artillery. This
made it difficult for artillery to keep pace with maneuver
which affected the responsiveness of fire support.
8. (U) RECOMMENDED ACTION: Replace the M548 with the CATV or
HEKTT. The CATV is preferred because it is designed to support
the M109, has the same chassis and power train as an M109, and
has more armor protection than a REMTT.
9. (U) COMMENTS: Replacing the M548 is the most critical
r @ irement within the direct support battalions.
(U) SUBJECT: OPERATIONS
(U) INTEROPERABILITY: MATERIEL
