JULLS LONG REPORT
1. (U) JULLS NTJMBER: 52059-99258 (00013), submitted by FIRE
SUPPORT OFF, 24 ID, 870-5516, (912)767-5516.
2. (U) No type OPN DESERT STORM NOTES conducted by 24 IN DIV (MECH)
on 05/20/91.
3. (U) KEYWORDS: GPS, NAVIGATION, FIRE SUPPORT, FISTV, COLT,
4. (U) TITLE: GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEM (GPS)
5. (U) OBSERVATION: The Global Positioning System (GPS) was
invaluable to artillery operations in a desert environment.
6. (U) DISCUSSION: GPS quickly provided accurate grid
locations. In an environment devoid of terrain features, it was
critical for navigation and self-location. It was accurate
enough to be used for initializing and updating the PADS survey
computer when conventional survey data was not available. There
were not enough GPS's to supply all agencies who needed them.
Specifically, FIST / COLT teams and logisticians needed GPS'S.
Additionally, GPS batteries were in short supply at times.
7. (U) LESSON LEARNED: GPS can satisfy the hasty survey needs
of artillery units, especially in areas where self-location by
conventional means (e.g., mapspot) is difficult if not
impossible. More GPSs are needed for fire support elements (to
ensure accurate target location) and logist3'.cians.
S. (U) RECOMMENDED ACTION: Until the position locating system
for the FISTV is fielded,, supply FIST / COLT teams with GPS.
Provide GPS to key elements (e.g., S4, maintenance) within
artillery battalions. This is a critical item; buy GPS
off-the-shelf until enough are available through supply
external antenna.
