          2. (U) No type OPN DESERT STORM NOTES conducted by 24 IN DIV (MECH)
          on 05/20/91.

          3. (U) KEYWORDS: FIRE SUPPORT, FISTV, COLT,

          4. (U) TITLE: FIST VEHICLE

          5. (U) OBSERVATION: Mounted on the M113 chassis, the FISTV is
          too slow to support mechanized maneuver forces.

          6. (U) DISCUSSION: The M113 is much slower than the Ml and M2,
          and is quickly outdistanced when maneuver forces travel at
          higher rates of speed.

          7. (U) LESSON LEARNED: Unless maneuver forces travel at
          moderate rates of speed, they will outdistance their FIST / COLT
          teams and lose their fire support.

          8. (U) RECOMMENDED ACTION: Mount the F.ISTV on  a tracked chassis
          such as the M2, that.can move as fast as modern tanks and
          Bradleys.

          9. (U) COMMENTS: The pace of combat operations in DESERT   STORM
          clearly showed the inadequacy of the M113 chassis and the  need
          for its replacement.
