          4. (U) TITLE: MOBILITY

          5. (U) OBSERVATION: The 24 ID moved faster and further than any
          heavy division in history. The marking, clearing, and improving
          of over 500 km of combat trails allowed this to occur.


          6. (U) LESSON LEARNED:
          1) In-depth terrain analysis was invaluable to the early
          selection of combat trails and the development of the trail
          marking plan.

          2) The combat trail marking plan was executed to a point
          approaching perfection.

          3) Marking of the trails enabled speedy resupply of the 24 ID
          in the Euphrates River Valley.

          4) Corps combat heavy engineer battalions provided follow-on
          route improvement.

          5) Breaching capabilities moved forward.with the maneuver
          units. The wheeled battalions' configuration hampered the
          engineers' ability to fully concentrate assets forward.
