          4. (U) TITLE: IMPACT OF HEAT ON SIGNAL EQUIPMENT

          5. (U) OBSERVATION: The extreme heat of the Saudi Arabian and
          Iraqi deserts had a detrimental effect on the functioning of
          some signal equipment.

          6. (U) DISCUSSION:   The AN/TTC-41 (automatic switchboard
          experienced significant maintenance problems because of
          overheating. In addition, the AN/GRC-106 experienced
          overheating problems.

          .7. (U) RECOMMENDED ACTION: All switchboard air conditioners
          should be exchanged for units which are designed to work in low
          humidity (arid),regions. Also, the air conditioner should be
          mounted on the front of the shelter so it will dispense cool air
          directly on the SB-3614. The AN/GRC-142 (RATT) should be
          equipped with air conditioners to preclude overheating of the
          organic AN/GRC-106 radio.
