                                                                     05/30/91
                                   JULLS LONG REPORT

          1. (U) LTULLS NUMBER: 51973-10215 (00007), submitted by DIVISION
          SURGEON, 24 ID, 870-5516, (912)767-5516.

          2. (U) No type OPN DESERT STORM NOTES conducted by 24 IN DIV (MECH)
          on 03/05/91.

          3. (U) KEYWORDS: COMMUNICATION, MEDICAL, MEDEVAC,

          4. (U) TITLE: COMMUNICATIONS IN MEDICAL UNITS

          5. (U) OBSERVATION: The medical companies were not equipped with
AM communication assets until two months after deployment. This
caused a problem for command and control of MEDEVAC missions.
Battalion aid stations did not have FM and AM communications
available for requesting and monitoring MEDEVAC.

          6. (U) DISCUSSION: After obtaining AM communications, medical
companies were able to monitor both the MEDEVAC frequency and
the AM medical net. This allowed the DISCOM medical operations
center to monitor and control medical missions.

          7. (U) LESSON LEARNED: An AM medical net was needed to monitor
and control all medical missions. The net was temporarily
established for the division. An AM net for the 24 ID should be
established as a permanently operating net. Battalion aid
stations should also have AM and FM communication assets.

          8. (U) RECOMMENDED ACTION: The medical net should be a
permanent part of the division SOP and officially established
through signal channels. Battalion aid stations should have
communication assets, (i.e., AM and FM to monitor and request
          MEDEVACS.)

          9. (U) COMMENTS: Limited communication between medical support
assets caused a breakdown in control. Placing the communication
assets needed to the battalion aid stations and medical
would allow for smoother medical operations.

              (U) SUBJECT: COMMUNICATIONS

              (U) INTEROPERABILITY: STRUCTURE

              (U) Lesson distributed by: 24TH IN DIV.
