                                   JULLS LONG REPORT

          1. (U) JULLS NUMBER: 52067-78970 (00014), submitted by SIGNAL
          OFFICER, 24 ID, 870-5516, (912)767-5516.

          2. (U) No type OPN DESERT STORM NOTES conducted by 24 IN DIV (MECH)
          on 05/20/91.

          3. (U) KEYWORDS: NIGHT VISION GOGGLES, GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTMS,
          TIRES, AM RADIO, .

          4. (U) TITLE: GENERAL NOTES

          5. (U) OBSERVATION: General Notes.

          6. (U) DISCUSSION: Many minor points were learned during
          OPERATION DESERT SHIELD / STORM.

          7. (U) LESSON LEARNED:
              a. Inadequate NVG's in the battalion.

              b. Inadequate GPS's in the battalion.

              c. Locally procured sand tires worked well in loose sand
but ruptured easily in rocky Iraqi terrain.
              a. Map exercises with all division signal officers and down
to team chief level were essential for communications success
          during DESERT STORM.

              e. AM radios work. But, we need more of them; we must
train more with them; and we need a better secure system then
the "sounds like Donald Duck" KY-65.

          8. (U) RECOMMENDED ACTION:
              a. Get more UVG's and GPS'S. They were the best force
multiplier we had in the desert.

              b. Replace the CUCV with HMMWV. If these can not be
procured, then get decent high flotation tires like the HMMWV's
          for the CUCV fleet.

              C. Practice and rehearse everything. Time spent rehearsing
          is essential.

              d. Fix the AM radio problem. Buy more radios, train with
them, and develop a VINSON apparatus for them.

          9. (U) COMMENTS: You must see where you're going, to be able to
get there, know where you are when you get there, be able to
tell people where you are, and rehearse everything so you know
the answer to the other four items. Resolving these problems
will pay big dividends because they are essential combat
          multipliers
