             4. (U) TITLE: COMBAT STRESS / BATTLE FATIGUE

             5. (U) OBSERVATION: The soldiers of the 24 ID received a
             predeployment briefing regarding combat stress / battle fatigue
             behaviors. The purpose of these briefings was to educate
             soldiers regarding the importance of recognizing the normal
             mental, physical, and emotional signs and symptoms of combat
             stress and battle fatigue.

             6. (U) DISCUSSION: Combat stress / battle fatigue can be a
             normal reaction to combat. Although it cannot be prevented, it
             can be controlled. During OPERATION DESERT SIIIELD / STORM, the
             education and preventive measures taken by the Division Mental
             Bealth professionals prevented soldiers from being evacuated to
             a corps level facility. Soldiers were quickly treated and
             returned to duty.

             7. (U) LESSON LEARNED: As a result of the      pre-battle briefing,
             combat stress and battle fatigue were minimized and
             post-traumatic stress disorders were prevented.

             S. (U) RECOMMENDED ACTION: Combat stress / battle fatigue
             prevention and education training is of vital importance that
             should continue to be utilized. Educating and training both
             commanders and soldiers is of vital importance to prevent these
             problems.
