          5. (U) OBSERVATION: Placement of the 24 ID mental health
          professionals in the forward support medical company improved
          their effectiveness by working with commanders to identify and
          help with troubled or problem soldiers.

          6. (U) DISCUSSION: During the early stages of OPERATION DESERT
          SHIELD, the mental health professionals were located in the
          forward support medical company. In anticipation of the
          majority of the combat stress / battle fatigue cases developing
          in the maneuver battalions, they were assigned io each brigade
          to manage and treat casualties.

          7. (U) LESSON LEARNED,: The forward placement of these
          specialists allowed casualties to be properly treated and
          managed. Soldiers were quickly returned to duty which allowed
          them to remain with their unit and continue their mission.

          8. (U) RECOMMENDED ACTION: The division mental health
          professionals should be assigned to each brigade during the
          early stages of field operations to facilitate establishment of
          rapport with commanders and soldiers.
