24 SIG, 24TH ID, 764-4103.
2. -CUJ- Operation DESERT SHIELD conducted by 24TH ID @MI on 07/09/90.
3.(U@ KEYWORDS: COMMUNICATIONS, LOGISTICS, MANEUVER, COMMAND AND
CONTROL.
4. -CUI TITLE: 5-TON TPU AND WRECKER SUITABLITY fOR DESERT TERRAIN
.ItJ)@ OBSERVATION: 5-TON TPUs and 5-TON wreckers are not well
suited to a desert terrain.
[.(U@ DISCUSSION: 5-TON TPUs and wreckers get stuck very
easily in the desert terrain. The Signal Battalion has four
TPUs and two wreckers, These vehicles have averaged a combined
operations rate of about S07,, often due to drive train and
transmission problems which we attribute to the B-TON's
differculty In negotiation this terrain. Half of our recovery
operations have been for our 5-TONs, to include our wreckers.
Much of the Signal Battalion's equipment is positioned on hgh
ground, which increases the trafficability issue.
7(UtV LESSON LEARNED. 5-TON users must choose routes with
great care. While convnunications criteria are key in selecting
communications sites, so is 5-TON trafficability.
8(U)@@ RECOMMENDED ACTION: Replace the 5-TON TPUs and wreckers
with HEMTT TPUs and wreckers.
